School Readiness
Primary school will not slow down for a child who is not ready. This year is about making sure yours walks in able, and knowing it.
The short answer
RightStart School Readiness runs at 38 Persiaran Batu Uban, The Century, Gelugor, for children aged five and six. It covers reading fluency, handwriting, mental maths, and the independence Standard One assumes: managing a bag, asking for help, and finishing a task without a teacher beside you. Full day and half day, 7.30am to 6.30pm.
What readiness actually means
Reading is only half of it
Most parents worry about academics. Teachers in Standard One worry about something else: can the child listen to an instruction given once, sit long enough to finish, open their own water bottle and speak up when they are lost.
We work on both. Reading, writing and maths every day, and the quiet independence that decides whether a bright child copes in a class of thirty.
- Reading simple books aloud with understanding, not just decoding
- Writing their name, then words, then sentences, with correct pencil grip
- Mental maths to twenty, number bonds and simple word problems
- Following a two step instruction given once, and finishing without prompting
- Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin foundations for a Malaysian primary classroom

Questions
Readiness questions
My child will be six next year. Is it too late to start?
No. A focused year, or even two terms, changes a lot at this age. Come in and we will tell you honestly what is achievable in the time you have.
Do you prepare children for SJKC as well as national schools?
We build English literacy, Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin foundations. Tell us which primary school you are aiming for and we will weight the plan towards it.
What if my child is already reading well?
Then we stretch them and put the effort into whatever is actually behind, which at this age is often writing stamina or independence rather than reading.
Is there homework?
A little, and always short. The aim is to build the habit of sitting down to finish something, not to fill your evening.
What happens after Standard One starts?
Most families stay with us. Our after-school care and tuition programme picks up from Standard 1 through to Standard 6, so the same people who prepared your child for primary school keep an eye on how it is actually going. See after-school care and tuition.
