Junior Preschool

This is the year curiosity gets structure. Enough routine to build attention, enough freedom that learning still feels like their own idea.

The short answer

RightStart Junior is our preschool for three and four year olds at No. 15 Jalan Pantai Jerjak 17, Bayan Lepas. The day mixes phonics, early numeracy, fine motor work and outdoor play, with daily Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin exposure. Full day and half day places, 7.30am to 6.30pm.

What they actually learn

Skills you will see at the dinner table

Parents judge a preschool by what they notice at home. In this year it should be a pencil held properly, counting that means something, a child who waits for their turn and can tell you about their day in order.

We teach those explicitly. Phonics daily in short bursts, number sense with real objects, and fine motor work disguised as play because a four year old will practise for an hour if it looks like fun.

  • Letter sounds and blending, in five to ten minute sessions that hold attention
  • Counting, sorting and comparing with real objects before worksheets
  • Cutting, threading, tracing and drawing to build hand strength for writing
  • Turn taking, tidying up and sitting through a task, practised every day

Questions

Junior preschool questions

Is this the same as tadika?

Broadly yes. In Malaysia, taska covers under fours and tadika covers four to six. Our Junior room bridges both: it runs like a preschool with the care standards of a taska.

Will my child be pushed academically?

They will be stretched, not pushed. Phonics and numeracy are daily but short. A three year old who hates the pencil today will not read better tomorrow for being forced.

My child speaks mostly Mandarin or Hokkien at home. Will they cope?

Yes, and this is common here. Teachers use the home language while a child settles, then shift the balance towards English as their confidence grows.

How do you handle biting or hitting?

Calmly, consistently, and with you told the same day. At this age it is communication, not character, and it responds to a plan.
